bitching about bitches

I removed “bitch” from my lexicon of insults a while back. I found that the word would arise when dealing with or describing unpleasant women. My problem with the word is that it brings up all sorts of sexist baggage that has nothing to do with the unpleasant woman.

If I need a word for an unpleasant woman, then I’ll use the same words that I’d use for an unpleasant man: a55hole or jerk.

The verb ‘bitch’ has similar problems. It’s not as overtly sexist but it seems to be gathering baggage, especially if you say that a woman is bitching about something.

I was recently reminded of the word ‘kvetch’ by my brother-in-law (thanks Scott). I like it because it conveys the complaining aspect of bitching without the sexist baggage. I’ll try to use it and see how many blank looks I get.

Having said (written really) all this, I’ll still tell my dog Lulu, as we go for a walk, “Let’s go, bitch.” That never gets old.
