Note: If you don’t know what a Dalek is, please see Dalek or ask any Doctor Who fan.
Ellen and I would often watch Doctor Who when we lived in England in the 60s. We were terrified of the Daleks, who were some of the major bad guys on the show. While we were terrified of the Daleks, we still didn’t want to miss the show, so we did the next best thing: We hid behind the couch.
It seemed to make sense to us at the time.
For whatever reason, I thought that we were the only ones who did this.
A few years ago, I was watching an episode of Coupling. There was a scene when a character described the many virtues of couches. He then said “And, of course,” he jumped behind the couch, “Daleks!”
Apparently, as Ellen and I cowered behind behind the couch, an awful lot of other kids across the country were also cowering behind their couches. We weren’t alone in our fear.
This makes me think that it’d be cool to have a shirt with a picture of a couch and a caption saying “First Level Dalek Defense”.Maybe extra large. I’m partial to neon green.
