I recently read that if you message “pew pew pew” from your iPhone to someone who also has an iPhone, that it’ll put on a fancy laser light show with sound effects to the recipient.

“Cool” I thought, and texted “pew pew pew” to Pam. Pam was down the hall at the time and asked me “Why are you texting ‘pew pew pew” to me. She didn’t sound like she’d just seen a fancy laser light show with sound effects.

I said “I just read an article which said that if I message ‘pew pew pew’ from my iPhone to someone who also has an iPhone, that it’ll put on a fancy laser light show with sound effects”.

Pam said “It didn’t do that.”

I sent a few variations on the pew pew pew theme to see if any of them would work. “pew pew” did the trick.

A little while later, we both got a message from a friend in a group chat. I figured that it’d be funny to sent my new-found pew pew trick back to the chat. The message that I sent was “oooooo pew pew” and apparently that wasn’t close enough to “pew pew” to warrant putting on the fancy laser light show with sound effects.

Even worse, I was actually holding Pam’s phone when I did that, so it looks like Pam was sending weird messages.
