I was moving a big pile of mulch from the driveway to spread it around the various gardens around the house.
As a neighbor walked by with her dog, I waved hello.
As she waved back, she said “It’s a beautiful day.”
I answered “Yes it is.”
At this point, I realized that she’d actually said “You’ve a beautiful garden” and that “Yes it is” was a most immodest response.
I ran thru a list of possible corrections, but each one was more wordy and ineffectual than the last.
I finally decided to shut up and take the compliment. I said “Thank you.”
