I was walking Lulu around the block and I noticed a dog in a front yard playing with a ball. I’d seen the dog before. It was a mid-sized retriever looking dog about a year old. It was kept inside the yard by an invisible fence. I watched the dog playing with the ball as we walked toward it.
Then I saw the dog lose control of the ball and the ball rolled down the driveway and across the street. The dog stood at the end of the driveway and stared at the ball.
I’ve seen some sad looking dogs before but, gosh, this dog looked sadder than most. He sat and stared at the ball and looked as though his whole doggy world had come crashing down.
When we got to the ball, Lulu sniffed at it, then I picked it up and tossed it back to the dog. The dog jumped excitedly and started playing with the ball again.
Lulu and I have walked past this dog many times since. He always stops to look at me like a long-lost friend.
Or course, he might just be waiting for another ball.
