cruising 2016: dance notes

On the cruise, there were a variety of bands for us to dance/listen to:

  • Segundo was a solo classical guitarist who played background/ambient music. He never played anything that we wanted to dance to.
  • Terra Duo weren’t very good musically but played songs that were easy to dance to.
  • Mirage Trio played exclusively Latin music. We were able to dance to at least half of their songs.
  • Funk It Up were a Portugese quartet that played mostly classic rock. We couldn’t dance to a lot of their songs but we didn’t care since the songs were performed so well.

We managed to keep pretty busy every night with dancing. When we finished dinner, usually around 7:30-8:00, we’d move from one venue to the next until everyone stopped playing.

One night, there was a dance contest and Pam was a contestant with a crew member (an I.T. guy. Go figure) she did better than last time. Her team was second to be kicked off instead of first.

After the contest, there was a dance party by the pool. Funk It Up was playing a lot of fast dance songs. After listening for a while, I found a way to dance to some of the songs that I’d thought I couldn’t dance to.

Toward the end of the party, they played Misirlou from Pulp Fiction. We heard an extremely fast cha-cha beat so we tried to dance to that. We did pretty well considering that we’re not that good at cha-cha. At least, I’m not that good. I found myself kinda stamping my feet around instead of a graceful “chat cha cha” and I was sorta just tossing Pam around but no one seemed to notice.

In fact, I was the one not noticing stuff. There was a crowd around us cheering us on. I was more worried about staying upright. I’d thought they were just cheering the band.

Throughout the week, a number of folks complimented our dancing. I’ve learned to shut up and take a compliment but some of the compliments seemed a bit left handed. A couple of folks said that our dancing was inspirational. That sorta felt like we were good for folks our age.

After the cruise, on a bus from the ship’s port to the airport, someone said “We really enjoyed watching you dance on the ship.”

That’s better.
