disgusting ethnic foods

I’ve already written about my adventures with Chinese cuisine when I was in Guangzhou (Chinese Food). To summarize: I didn’t enjoy most of it.

When I was in a grocery store recently, I noticed some foods that would strike most Americans as really nasty:

Steak and kidney pie Most of the uninitiated will focus on the function of kidneys instead of their taste and texture. My wife’s thought as she was trying to tiptoe around the bits of kidney was “Where’s the darned steak?” The steak is sorta like the mythical pork in “pork and beans”

Jellied eels I don’t know. I don’t care.

I was surprised to see these in a non-specialized grocery store. I looked up and saw that I was in the British part of the ethnic food section of the store. I’m used to thinking of “ethnic” as someone else and not applying to me. Wrong again.

Here are some other British treats that weren’t in the store:

Black (blood) pudding To most folks, puddings are sweet, delicious, tasty desserts. So why not make a sausage of coagulated blood and call it pudding?

Haggis No. Google it if you want. You probably wouldn’t believe me.

The point of all this is that some folks would react to these foods as I did to some of the Chinese stuff.
