“The Man in the High Castle” is a TV series about the USA in 1962 in a timeline where the allies lost WWII. It’s based on a book with the same name by Phillip K. Dick. I’ve seen five episodes so far and I’m pretty happy with it.
The opening credits show an animated map like you’d see in movies from the 40s and 50s, except that the moving arrows are labeled “Nazis” and “Japan” and they’re invading the USA mainland. This was followed with images of Mount Rushmore and the Statue of Liberty overlaid with Nazi paratroopers floating down in their parachutes.
The audio for the credits is a haunting version of Edelweiss by an unaccompanied female vocalist.
These opening credits caused a sense of alarm and almost nausea in me. I felt as though it wasn’t just inaccurate but morally wrong. I once had a similar response when reading a detailed “what if” story about the nazis invading the British mainland.
Anyway, I’m left with this haunting version of Edelweiss stuck in my head. Probably until I finish this series.
Only five episodes to go.
