O’Henry watches

Some Christmas around 2000-2004, Pam and I decided to give each other watches.
We’re both pretty picky about watches so we each picked out the watch that we wanted the other to buy us.
We then wrapped them up and waited until Christmas to give them to each other.

After buying the watches, Burger King or someone started selling Simpsons watches.
I figured that it’d be pretty funny to get Pam a watch with Marge Simpson on it so that she’d find that watch instead of the watch that she’d picked out.
Then I’d be all smug and give her the real watch.

I was pretty proud of myself and told Morgan because I was dying to tell someone about this great joke that I was pulling.

On Christmas day, we started opening presents.
I opened my gift watch first.
I was looking at a Homer Simpson watch.
I was horribly confused and Pam and Morgan and everyone else were laughing.
Had I gotten the watches mixed up and opened Pam’s by mistake?
No. I had gotten Pam a Marge watch and this was Homer.
The penny dropped.
Pam had pulled the same gag on me that I had on her.

Morgan mentioned that his mother had told him about the gag that she’d done with my watch.
Morgan was looking at me with a smirk on his face.
Pam thought that the smirk meant he liked the joke that his mother had pulled.
I knew that it also meant that he’d known all along that his parents had pulled the same joke on each other.

I realized that Pam still didn’t know what was going to happen when she opened her watch.
This meant that I was going to have something extra to laugh about when Pam opened her gift.

Pam then opened her gift watch and she was suitably confused and surprised when she saw the Marge watch.
For her, the penny dropped more quickly.
