I’d been watching a documentary about Pink Floyd’s Echoes and they mentioned that one section of Echoes sounds very similar to the opening of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera. Roger Waters had noticed it, told anyone who’d listen about it, but didn’t take any legal action.

Having watched the documentary, I was inspired to play Echoes. Around this time, Pam got home from work.

A few minutes later, Pam said “Wow, all of a sudden this song took me to Phantom of the Opera.”

Oh yeah. I said “Funny you should mention that” and recapped what I’d just learned from the documentary.

Since then, I’ve played various versions Echoes (I’m going through an instrumental program rock phase) and the Phantom thing is pretty hard to unhear. It’s not a bad thing, but it is distracting.
