username / password

I discovered an old, retired laptop in our garage. We had no use for it as it was fairly old and slow. I figured that I’d donate it somewhere since we have enough clutter in our itty bitty house.

The first step was to wipe the hard drive. I didn’t know what was on the disk, but I didn’t want anyone else getting it.

The laptop was using Linux, so I used a live Linux dvd, wiped the hard drive, and installed a new copy of Linux.

Since there was nothing on the hard drive that I cared about, I set the username to “username” and the password to “password” so that whoever got this next couldn’t possibly have trouble logging on.

When I got to the donation place, I handed it over, told them that the username was “username” and the password was “password”, and started to drive off.

As I drove off, I saw in my mirror that the donation place guy was chasing after me and waving the laptop. I stopped and he told me that he needed the username and password.

I tried to tell him the username and password (again) but he interrupted me and told me to write it on his phone. I was going to argue about it, but it was obvious that it wasn’t going to get me anywhere.

I took his phone and wrote “username is username, password is password” and hoped that someone would figure it out.
