When my younger son was in high school, he told me that he hated the sound of the oboe. I disagreed because I thought that some of the most beautiful and expressive passages in classical music involve the oboe.
We discussed this for a while and got to the root of the problem. He’d only heard the oboe as part of the high school band. He hadn’t heard the oboe performed by good musicians performing good music.
I’d had a similar discussion with my older son. He told me that he didn’t like piano music. He obviously wasn’t listening to the right piano music.
I handed him my copy of Selling England by the Pound by Genesis. I said “Listen to the third track.” This was Firth of Fifth.
I wish that more problems were this easy to fix.
