In Spanish class, we’re working on ages. as in “How old are you?”, “I am thirty five years old.”

However, in Spanish you say the equivalent of “I have thirty five years.”

Before we got through that though, the instructor stressed the distinction between años and anos. The squiggly line over the n makes it sound like “an yoss”. As opposed to “anoss”.

Años, which means years, is pretty innocuous but anos means anus and that can be pretty embarrassing if you weren’t planning on talking about assholes.

As the instructor explained this there was some serious giggling from the students. This is pretty much expected from elementary or secondary schools but some might be disappointed to hear that 30 or 40 year olds were involved. Heck, there was even a 60 year old snorting.

Later in the class, the instructor asked us to type up a bunch of sentences using the word años. Someone pointed out that none of us had keyboards that supported the n with the squiggle. All of our typing would be full of assholes.

There was more giggling.
