Back in the mainframe days, late 90s or so, we developed a habit of abbreviating a lot of phrases to their initial letters.
I recently checked the internet to see if any of these made it to the national lexicon. It seems that some of my favorites did get popular.
I’m not saying that we are responsible for these. I’m pretty sure that these are cases of multiple discovery.
gfy
Go <rhymes with duck> Yourself.
Usage: “I’m sorry but I can’t help you, so gfy there good buddy,”
Breaks the ice at parties.
stby
Sucks To Be You
Usage: “I know that you need my help but I really don’t want to, So STBY.”
sufo
Shut Up and <rhymes with duck> off.
Usage: “We’re pretty sick of listening to you and we’re really sick of you being here, so SUFO.”
We found that we needed a way to say “Shut Up.” We also wanted to convey that shutting up and hanging around is not an acceptable alternative.
