Genesis: Live 1973

My brother sent me a link to an HD rendition of the Genesis: Live 1973 recording. I didn’t want to watch it on my phone since recordings of live music have enough audio problems without adding the phone’s crappy, tinny speakers to the mix.

Later, I was trapped in my house with a bad back and it seemed like a good time to watch the video over the home theater. The sound was better than I expected for a live recording.

These are the songs performed:

  • Watcher of the Skies from Foxtrot,
  • Ballad of a Moonlit Knight from Selling England by the Pound
  • I Know What I Like from Selling England by the Pound,
  • The Musical Box from Nursery Cryme
  • Supper’s Ready from Foxtrot

Throughout the performance, Peter Gabriel did his then signature costume changes. At the time, everyone thought that this was amazing and way cool. I never saw Genesis until after Gabriel was long gone so it was sorta cool to finally see this.

I’ve always had a tough time figuring out which sounds were guitars and and which were keyboards. With Genesis, it was harder because their melodies often flow into each other. This was a good chance to see who was doing what. For instance, in The Musical Box, I’d always assumed that Tony Banks, the keyboardist, was playing some kind of harpsichordy thing. Instead, he was playing a 12 string guitar. In fact, Steve Hackett and Mike Rutherford were also playing 12 string guitars at the same time. (36 strings, no waiting)

They wrapped up the hour with the 20+ minute Supper’s Ready. My favorite section of this is labeled Apocalypse in 9/8. It’s pretty intense, but I guess that’s expected since it’s about the end of everything.

Overall, it was pretty awesome. Thanks Alx.

Oh yeah, This is it until youtube changes something:
