on the importance of keeping one’s GPS up to date

A friend of mine, let’s call her Olivia, was telling me how she’d gotten lost because her GPS had misled her. She’d been sent through all sorts of backroads in the west Michigan area.

Her husband, Peter, pointed out that it was probably because she’d never updated her GPS in 10 years. Olivia asked “Who updates their GPSs?!”

Peter was silent. I thought that this was odd since he’d just given her grief for not updating her GPS. Then Peter went for some misdirection. “I bet Steve updates his GPS. He works with computers.”

How did I get into this?

Olivia pressed the issue on me. “Steve, do you ever update your GPS?”

“<ahem> Twice in the last year.”

I suppose that I could’ve told them that the route to Evansville had been significantly altered by a new freeway in the last year and I needed the new routes to shave an hour or two off our travel time.

However, I didn’t see this helping their marital bliss any.
