robots

I was with Morgan and his family visiting his workplace. One of the things we saw were telepresence robots.

They look like carpet sweepers with a tablet stuck on the top of the handle. If someone is using one of these, then they can see and hear what’s going on around the robot. They can also tell the robot to move around.

The point of all this is to enable folks to move around the workplace and meet with folks while actually being somewhere else.

We first saw a bunch of them in a telepresence robot parking lot but we soon found one rolling its way down a hallway.

When Hazel passed the robot, she looked up and saw the face of the woman who was driving the robot. Hazel waved at the woman and the woman pleasantly smiled and waved back.

Thinking about it later, we agreed that it’d be much better to replace the video feed of the robot’s operator with a picture of Marvin the paranoid android from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy or Rosie the robot from The Jetsons.

Better still would be a video loop of a Dalek from Doctor Who screaming “EXTERMINATE!”
