tried and true software recovery techniques

I was trying to update some security policies with <software product> when <software product> started misbehaving. It accepted my updates but didn’t put them into effect. It reminded me of an old civil service joke:

How does a civil servant say “No”?
He says “Yes sir! Absolutely! I’ll do it right away!”
And then he doesn’t do a damn thing.

So <software product> accepted my changes but act upon them.

I called the fine tech support folks at <software vendor> and they told me to make a bunch of complicated changes and then “Turn it off and turn it on again.”

I skipped the complicated changes and went directly to “Turn it off and turn it on again.”

That worked.
