It seems as though very little happens most of the time or a lot of the time. Listening to people talk, I get the impression that if something happens a lot, then it happens 99% of the time.
Of course, if someone wants to be emphatic, they’ll say that something happened 99.9% of the time.
I once was in a conversation with a girl who said “99.9”, then a thoughtful pause, then “9 percent of the time”. Her look of concentration made it seem as though she was using a mathematical formula to calculate the difference between “very” and “very very”.
A similar practice is used with certainty. Few people are pretty sure of anything. I keep hearing that folks are 90% or some other percent sure. I’m pretty sure that math or statistical tables weren’t used when they said this.
I have noticed that I sometimes fall into this lapse of accuracy myself. I’m trying to stop though. I’m 99% sure of it.
