Two

Pam and I both have a soft spot for Doctor Seuss – especially “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. Two of the lines that stuck with me are

  • “and the Grinch found the strength of *ten* Grinches, plus two!” and
  • “and he saw a small Who. Little Cindy Lou Who, who was no more than two”.

We sorta combined the two lines with Lulu. We got  her when she was three but we starting saying “Liitle Lu Lu, who is no more than one, plus two.” We’ve been doing this ever since, adjusting the first number as time passed.

Last year or so, we were with a relative and his wife. We were talking about our dogs and, let’s call her Janice, asked how old Lulu was. Pam and I said, in unison, “”Liitle Lu Lu, who is no more than six, plus two.”

Janice started laughing her head off and looking as though she thought we’d just arrived from an episode of The Twilight Zone. It seems that she wasn’t that familiar with “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and really wasn’t expecting us to answer her question in harmony and rhyme.

Which continues to prove that I/we freak people out the most when I’m/we’re not really trying.
