The Continuing Adventures of Steve and Pam – 2013

Xmas, 2012
When trying to leave Evansville on Boxing Day, we found that most of Indiana was covered by a significant snowstorm. Driving was tough as Indiana doesn’t know how to use snowplows. The ruts in the road on highway 41 would try to toss the car into the ditch if we went faster than 20 MPH. No one was going faster than that anyway. It took most of the day to get to Terre Haute, 100 miles out of Evansville. We were able to get to Indianapolis but couldn’t go further: the north end of the state was closed up. We spent the night there in a hotel and the roads were all cleared up by daybreak.
Julian
Julian John Oliver Squire was born on New Year’s Day. We missed his birth by a few hours. We did set a land-speed record on the way to Evansville. We visited Julian and Hazel throughout the rest of the year. We also saw Beth and Morgan a couple of times while we were there.
Don Donovan
Pam’s uncle Don passed away on April 14. Don had pancreatic cancer and had been declining pretty quickly. In his last few weeks, Don’s son Kim had moved in with Don to take care of him. Pam, Scott, and Corwin managed to visit Don  to say goodbye the week before Don passed away. Pam and Don also spent that time going over Don’s wishes for Don’s estate since Pam would become the estate’s trustee. When Don passed away, we drove over so that Pam could work with Kim on the arrangements. Corwin also drove over by way of Bloomington, Scott, Liz and Amber’s place. We made the same trip several times over the summer to get Don’s house ready for selling. Don had a lot of stuff.
Las Vegas dance camp
In June, we flew to Vegas for another week of dancing and dance lessons. This year, we cut back on the daytime lessons so that we could attend the evening classes on nightclub dancing. While we did have a great time in Vegas, Steve got sick on the flight back from Vegas to Minneapolis. There was much consternation and inconvenience and our insurance company spent $20,000 to find out that the doctors didn’t know what happened to Steve.
Pickering
Between the Canadian Thanksgiving and the US Thanksgiving we visited Steve’s folks in Pickering, Ontario. It was a good visit. We got to see most of Steve’s folks (Jasper was trapped in icy Calgary) and their folks, old friends (who are you calling old?) Ken and Marcy and their folks, and Pam’s stepmom Stella. We even got some shopping done.
Cruising
In November, we went on a cruise of the western Caribbean with 3 other couples. Pam knew the ladies from her ‘thirsty Thursday’ group. (They used to call themselves the ‘fitness ladies’ because some of them went to the same gym but later figured ‘who’s kidding who’?) We started and ended the cruise in Miami and visited Cozumel, Belize, Roatan, and Grand Cayman. We planned on beach hopping in Cozumel, snorkeling in Belize, zip-lining in Roatan but hadn’t figured out what to do in Grand Cayman. Steve suggested opening an off-shore bank account but everyone else said that was stupid. Since snorkeling in Belize was rained out, we did the snorkeling in Grand Cayman instead.
Thanksgiving
Our host for this year’s Thanksgiving was Beth’s sister Megan. She lives just outside of Lexington, Kentucky. We spent the Thursday (great feast Megan!) and Friday at Megan’s, Saturday in Evansville and drove back on Sunday.
Corwin
Corwin had a busy year. He bought a house in the spring and is renting out a couple of rooms to help pay the mortgage. He also started taking classes at Cornerstone University.
Morgan
After 9 years, Morgan finished up with the Marines. His last few years with them were a lot of work. Morgan started a full time curriculum with the University of Evansville, has a full time job and 2 part time jobs. He says that he still has less stress and can see more of his family.
